Mitzel Coal Trestle ready to take deliveries..

After my last post I continued working on the Mitzel Coal trestle deck and I installed it after shaving down and painting the foam.  I also sprinkled a little bit of black sanded grout around it. The picture below shows the finished trestle.  Does it look convincing?  Let me know.

  1. No,it shows incomplete and sloppy modeling. Ties are missing at the approach . There are no stops at the end of the rails. The track appears as if sitting on a fill; there is no trace of the structural parts of a trestle. Put stringers under the rails and caps across the bottoms of the stringers; then go a thinner styrene filler. The weathering on the board fence appears to be dabs from a paint brush and is not a convincing board-by-board treatment. Dick Bradley

  2. I didn't mean to call it finished as I do acknowledge it's a work in progress. I will not be putting structural supports outside of the stringers that you cannot see running down the length of the trestle. It's behind a fence and unless you are on top of it looking down you won't notice unless your really looking for it. And if that's the case, and you're operating, it means you're not paying attention to what you're doing. If it were going to be trestle out in the open I'd model it more faithfully. I have a friend who built a very large pier on his layout and he insisted that we install over 2000 pilings under it. We argued no one will ever see and know they are there. "He said I will." I don't subscribe to that. Also, there is the fact that of every picture I've ever scene, it always seems the case that everyone stood on that damn approach and shot into the yard. No one ever thought to document the scale track and Mitzel's siding behind it. It's frustrating.

I have not done any ballasting anywhere and certainly not yet in this scene. I did work on some parts of it putting in a stop at the end of the trestle and ties under the approach. The fence and the trestle still need to have the weathering finished with some pan pastels before it's done. Eventually I'll get to that.

Thanks for the feedback, it's always appreciated. :)

Overall. I think you did a nice job. I would only suggest a lot of weeds growing along the fence line and in the soil in front of it. Unless you aren't into that much detail. Otherwise, nice work
